Gaze 와 Stare 의 차이점
Gaze
look at something or someone for a long time, especially in surprise, admiration or because you are thinking about something else.
물끄러미 바라보다, 뚫어지게 보다, 관측하다.
1. 대부분의 사람들은 하루에도 여러 차례 거울을 들여다 봅니다.
Most people gaze into mirrors many times a day.
2. 그 노인이 너를 진지하게 바라봤어.
The old man gazed at you seriously.
Stare
look for a long time with the eyes wide open, especially when surprised, frightened or thinking
(눈을 크게 뜨고) 응시하다, 노려보다, 말똥말똥 쳐다보다
Stare는 깜짝 놀라서 눈을 크게 뜨고 오랫동안 지속적으로 쳐다보는 것을 말하는데,
이것은 영미인들에게 무례하게 빤히 쳐다보는 느낌을 준다.
사람일 경우 stare + at, 물건일 경우 stare + at/upon을 사용
1. 그는 나를 아래위로 훑어보았다.
He stared me up and down.
2. 그는 회중을 노려보아 입을 다물게 했다.
He stared the congregation into[to] silence.
